WELCOME
TO THE
TYRRELL FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY
Over the last 30 years there has been an ever increasing number of people taking
an interest in researching their family history. This absorbing hobby, in
many cases, has led to the desire to investigate in great detail the lives
of their forebears. This popular interest has resulted in the development
of Regional Societies, specialising in Genealogy and Heraldry, appropriate
to a given location and One Name Societies researching a single name.
In tracing and following his own Tyrrell Family Tree, our founder, John Edward
Tyrrell of Gosport, discovered and collected much data likely to be of interest
to other Tyrrells and Variants. Whereupon in October
1977, with the help of others, he contacted the 1300 Tyrrells then listed in
the UK Telephone Directories, inviting replies from those interested in the
formation of a Tyrrell Family History Society. This was then followed by sending
circulars to the other variants of the name, such as, Tyrell, Tyrrel,Tirrell,Turrell,Terrell,
etc. The response was so enthusiastic that on Saturday June 10th 1978, at an
Inaugural Meeting in London, the "Tyrrell Family History Society" was
formed.
Until 2007 the Society held three open meetings each year: Tyrrell
Day held at the beginning of June, Rufus Day in August and the A.G.M./Research
Day held in October. It was decided in 2006 that we should change this to having
two weekend gatherings one in January/February and a second in the Autumn,
this to adsorb the Tyrrell Day/AGM. The venues for these gatherings moves
around the country to be near to locations with Tyrrell
interests.
Rufus
Day continues and is held in the New Forest at the Sir Walter Tyrrell Inn located
near the Rufus Stone and is an informal Family Day.
Over the years much individual research has been carried out and sent to the
Society which is then made available to members. The collection of data growing
daily outstripped our ability to maintain manual records and since 1993 a computer
data base has been built up where all "TYRRELL EVENTS" are now stored
and can more readily provide feedback to members. During 2007 the decision
was taken to increase data available to members over the internet and to this
end a start has been made to transfer our archive materials into
digital form.
Access to the "TYRRELL EVENTS" data base is now available to paid up members of the Society and is accesable from this site.
TYRRELL EVENTS include events such as births, marriages, deaths, census data etc.
